University of Energy and Natural Resources Hosts Launch of Bono Region’s “Green Ghana” Campaign.

The nationwide “Green Ghana Project” by the Forestry Commission through the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, has commenced today Friday, June 11, 2021.

The University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani today 11th June, 2021 hosted the regional launch of the exercise, receiving senior members of govenment in the Bono Region, institutional heads, academics and students of the University.

Addressing the occasion, the Bono Regional Minister; Madam Justina Owusu – Banahene charged all and sundry to individually take up tree planting as a responsibility to safeguard our natural environment.

“If we don’t take care, there will be what we call extinction of some other products from the forest region because of human activities. Therefore, let us try as much as possible to protect our environment and add on the greens so that tomorrow, when our children also come, we’ll not only mention them in books and history but they will have it ‘feeling- feeling’ and have a feel of it.” She said.

The Vice Chancellor of the University; Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako outlined the contribution of his institution in the area of afforestation “in conjunction with the national agenda including ensuring “that most tree planted have economic values.”

The Professor of plant virology added that a monitoring and evaluation team will be set up by the University in collaboration with the Forestry Commission to embark on a tree planting and maintenance agenda.

“Consequently, because greening Bono is to be an integral part of this University, a monitoring and evaluation team will also be established in collaboration with the Forestry Commission, to ensure that the activity (tree planting) does not end today but is rather nurtured and also established”, He stated.

The Bono Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission, Bono Regional Police Commander, Representatives from the Military and other stakeholders of the University were all present at the event.

The “Let’s go planting” campaign is targeted at planting five million trees across the today to restore our depleted forests.
