If you believe Florida is just a place for elderly retirees to take in a little sun, you’re severely mistaken. Florida continues to be not only a prime destination for visitors of all ages, but a place where young adults move for job opportunities, to raise a family, and just to improve their overall quality of life.

Just what is it that draws in these young visitors and residents? Good question. The answer is more than just Disneyland—although that definitely doesn’t hurt. Here are a few reasons why Florida is now in the top five American states people are moving to.

Warm Weather

An obvious reason why everyone is migrating to Florida is the sunshine and hot temperatures. Many older individuals move here every year because the warm weather is easy on their body, the sunshine provides plenty of health benefits, and there’s no risk of slipping on ice while shoveling snow.

Young individuals immigrating to Florida are also drawn in by the warm weather. Because of the abundance of beaches, parks, and outdoor activities, people in their 20s and 30s are looking for places where they can enjoy the warmth all year long. While many are excited to party on the beach til the wee hours of the morning, a lot of the draw has to do with the emphasis on a healthier lifestyle and having opportunities to stay active outdoors.

Another reason people like Florida is because real estate is often affordable, however this is becoming less so as popularity increases. Every area across the country was impacted by the housing market during the pandemic and when inventory became low, home costs went through the roof—even more so than other states.

Even though the home prices in Florida have increased at a higher rate than most other places in the country, it can still end up being more affordable compared to areas like Los Angeles or New York City. For the same price as an apartment in the city, you could easily afford a three-bedroom home just outside Orlando or Miami. Homes along the coast are usually most expensive, since they are the most desirable, but there are plenty of affordable homes in the center of the state. If you’re okay with a gorgeous lake view—and honestly, who wouldn’t be?—Gainesville or Kissimmee houses for rent are both affordable and spacious.

In addition to home affordability, Florida is one of the few states that have no individual income tax. This is a draw for many residents who’ve recently decided to call Florida home.

Florida continues to be a great place to live if you’re looking for job opportunities, outdoor activities, and safe neighborhoods, but teens and twenty-sometimes aren’t necessarily in that mindset yet. So, what’s bringing them to Florida? Florida is home to some of the country’s best universities, like the University of Florida, Florida State, and the University of South Florida. These schools are not only quality establishments, but the tuition is considerably low when compared to others around the country. This is true for out-of-state students, but students who live in Florida benefit from decreased tuition costs, meaning many young people are looking to make Florida their permanent address to reap those benefits.
