UMAT: Department of Geological Engineering are Winners of the 6th Vice Chancellor’s Challenge Cup

The 6th Vice Chancellor’s Challenge Cup of the University of Mines and Technology has successfully taken place at the UMaT Sports Center. The competition which was held over two days featured 19 participating teams from three different categories. These were the Female category, the Staff and sponsors category and the Male students’ category.  The final match was battled between the Department of Petroleum and the Department of Geological Engineering and after a great display of soccer during regulation time with intermittent rains, the game ended with a draw. After the penalty shoot out, the Department of Geological Engineering emerged winners with a 4-3 score in their favour.
Addressing the participating teams before kickoff, the Vice Chancellor, Prof J. S. Y. Kuma thanked all teams for taking part in the competition. He was happy that the competition had been staged successfully for the 6th time and indicated that it was because of the efforts of all stakeholders that the competition had reached thus far. He told the participating teams that it was an opportunity for them to create a shared space and experience and also to inculcate in them the values of selflessness, determination, endurance and patriotism as well as to help build esteem, leadership skills and the spirit of community relations and oneness.

Prof Kuma expressed satisfaction and thanked the Vice Chancellor’s Challenge Cup Committee for organising a successful event. He also thanked all the sponsors for making the event possible by donating in cash and kind. The sponsors for this year’s event were Ghana Manganese Company Limited, Wilhelm Construction Ltd, Fidelity Bank, Access Bank PLC, Arc Team 4 Consultancy, Ntico Construction Limited, So Nice Drinking Water and Ransbert Supplies. He was hopeful that the sponsors would continue to partner the University to organise the annual event so as to strengthen the relationship between the University and them.
This year the female category had three teams made up of students from the Tarkwa Midwifery School, Faculty of Engineering (FoE) Ladies and Faculty of Mineral Resource Technology (FMRT) Ladies. After an all-play-all game between the ladies, the FMRT Ladies won the day with 4 points after they were beaten by FoE Ladies 2-3 on penalties and shared a point each. The FMRT Ladies also beat the Tarkwa Midwifery School ladies 1-0 to gain 3 points. They took a trophy, medals and a cash award. The Midwifery Ladies who were the runners-up also received a consolation cash prize and medals.
The individual awards were as follows: the top scorer award for the Male Students’ category went to Robert Okpoti of the Department of Petroleum Engineering whilst the most valuable player award went to Nombo Cordel of the Department of Geological Engineering. The best player for the Staff/Sponsors category went to Mr Augustine Kwofie of the UMaT Senior member/Senior Staff team with Mr Kingsley Kwofie of the UMaT Senior Member/Senior Staff team emerging as the top scorer for the Staff/Sponsors category. With the Female Students’ category, Miss Georgina Sekyi of the FoE Ladies emerged as the most valuable player and Miss Esther Conduah of Tarkwa Midwifery School was awarded the top scorer of the category. They all received a cash price and a trophy each. The fair play team award went to the Department of Mathematical Sciences. This year the Technical Committee of the tournament also recognised and awarded the man and woman of each match played with a bottle of Champaign.

The staff/Sponsors category teams were the Junior Staffs of UMaT, Ghana Manganese Company (GMC), the Banks and the Senior Member/Senior Staffs of UMaT. The Senior Staff/Senior Members of UMaT and GMC staff played in the finals. The Senior Members/Senior Staffs of UMaT won the match with a goal to nil. They took away a trophy and a cash prize.
The Male Students’ Category had 12 teams from 11 departments and the School of Postgraduate Studies (SPS) of the University. After a great show of soccer among the teams and interference of the rains, Geological Engineering Department and Petroleum Engineering Department met in the finals. After drawing 0-0 in relegation time, Geological Engineering Department won 4-3 on penalties. The runners up were decorated with silver medals and a cash award. The Vice Chancellor, Prof J. S. Y. Kuma in his closing remarks thanked all the participating teams, Officiating Officials, the medical team, staff and students present and the Organising Committee for doing a great job and ensuring that the event ended successfully without any challenges. He then decorated the Department of Geological Engineering team with Gold medals and presented the ultimate cash award of GH₵2,000.00. The officiating Officials were also decorated with Gold medals by the Vice Chancellor.
