UCC: SRC Addresses Fees Brouhaha

In the communique, the SRC extended its warm regards to students and apologized for their long and loud silence on the school fees issue and explained they had to be silent on the issue because they wanted to monitor the situation critically in order to paint the right picture of the issue to students. The SRC said it had been closely monitoring the situation and had taken note of all the concerns and fears raised by students.
The SRC went further to explain that government has issued a directive for all public universities to submit their fees to parliament for approval in order to curb exploitation of students via the charging of exorbitant fees and dubious levies. Since this directive, proposed fees have always been submitted to parliament for thorough vetting and approval before being given the greenlight to be paid by students. As such students have been paying the fees agreed upon for the 2016/2017 academic year for a while.

The communique further went ahead to admonish students to plan and make their projections for the fees for the 2019/2020 academic year by using the amount paid in the 2016/2017 academic year as a reference. The SRC assured students that even though the proposed fees are still pending approval from parliament it will do anything in its power to protect the interests of students.
