You might be very well aware of the name Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, but have you ever wondered who this man Baba Yara is?
He is an ex-Ghanaian football player who played for Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Real Republicans and the Ghana Black Stars. Baba died in the year 1969 after a tragic accident whiles enroute with his team mates of the Real Republicans to Kpando for a league match. He got paralysed as a result and was not able to bounce back to football till he died in 1969 at the age of 33.

Describing his style of football, people who include Dogo Moro, his closest pal whom he confided in say he is one that Ghana has never seen up until now. A veteran Ghanaian commentator from Baba Yara’s time says he is synonymous to Juventus’ Ronaldo. He was named the best player in West Africa, King of wingers and his name was all over the continent.
Such a prolific player whose career had to end so quickly. This year, 2019, marks 50 years since the demise of the great King of Wingers, Baba Yara.
