I  want to use today to share my life in the university. For me school is very important, it’s not an end in itself but a means to it. I learned, I cried , I lost , I gained , I grieved. My university days were roller coaster moments. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. I came out a better person, a more informed person, a person who cares about others and about the world, a person who seeks to understand people and situations before making a judgement.

However, a lot of these were products of my choices. That is, what I fed my mind, people I had in my circle , things I paid attention to and how seriously I took my studies and self learning in general. Everyone has their story of how they university moments went, for some it might have been a waste of time to even come to school.

Not for me. I made amazing friends, I met wonderful people , I created memories, I started businesses, I failed at some, I excelled at some and I made impact on people I met , not all of them but majority of them.

For a lot of students the word University is an escape from reality .“ I’ll start that business when I complete school, I will take that course when I complete school, I’m in school , I can’t take a job or go on that adventure, this job is beneath me , I am a university student/ graduate . Many of us have used school as a shield  to not do some important things, to escape important decisions.

I get it, sometimes the reasons are genuine. Many students have been home for how many months now, 7 months and lot of people are idle because they know there is always school to go to. That time could have been used to start something, take an online course , learn a new program , work at your mother’s shop, take a part time job , do anything.

Many students then come into the real world after school only to realize things are so different. They ask what did you do apart from your studies ? What extra skill can you bring to the table , what seminars did you attend? What avenues did you use to make yourself better apart from your studies, what instruments can you play?

The funny thing is these are all opportunities the university offers us but most of us are so blind to it because our only idea of the university is to come and learn and go and then look for a better paying job, chill every Friday night and get married. SORRY but the real world is harder than that. The real world is about hard work and value creation, problem solvers and people who bring real solutions to the table. Maybe you know someone so you are relaxed that your future is secured no matter how you live your life . But imagine having all the connections in the world and being a problem solver, a person who is good at what he does, your value will become immeasurable.

For those who took the initiative to better themselves whiles in school, it’s so easy to adjust. I’ve met some of them, they belong wherever they go because they are versatile, they bring value wherever they are and they are valued. That is the kind of student you want to become . To any student reading this, it’s not too late. You can make a change , you can become better . You can start that business and still excel at your studies . I’ve been there and I did it and I know a lot of people who have too. Don’t let the university hinder you, let it propel you to become your best self.

Love from an Old student
