Horny Rampy First Year Epistle

Wow! It seems just yesterday when we reported to school as first years. Within just a twinkle of an eye, the first year is over. It’s over for good! To some of us who wish to complete university overnight, this is good news, but to my friends who wish to complete their university journey at a slow pace, how sad! There’s nothing I can do to help you since time seems to fly pretty fast of late.

University life. New friends. New teaching aids and styles. The challenge of how to adapt one’s self to this new environment was probably what was on the minds of every first year for the first few weeks. The issue of roommates, how accommodating they would also linger on the minds of many. But hey, in all, your time with them in the halls is over.

I know by now, those with wonderful roommates are continuing their new found friendships by being in the same rooms in their new hostels. Hmmm, those whose roomies made their rooms a living hell for them need not be told to look for heaven elsewhere.

Courses! Some tasking? Senior course mates who I wondered whether they were motivating or scaring us? Lest I forget the CWA calculation and the orientation. To all those who made it to all the days of the orientation, keep it up.

You’ve got something to brag about and those who made it a day or two, I’ve got no words for you. Matriculation, matriculation, matriculation! A big shout out to all those who spent so much wanting to look their best, but in the end couldn’t make it to the Great Hall simply because my College Matriculation was a five-minute event. Making new friends alongside studying, all too soon, the first semester was over.

The second semester began with almost every first year wondering how they fared in the first semester exams. The release of the results and pasting them on notice boards silenced many, giving others something to brag about and some, something to urge them to learn harder. The second semester was full of elections; hall, college, and SRC. Too many agendas, leaving some confused. Too much knocking on doors disturbing our sleep.

Amidst serious studies, securing for one’s self a hostel was paramount. Prior to the latter part of the semester, intensive studies began with the library almost full each day. The first year wasn’t bad at all. The time spent with friends, the times you were broke, the September rush, all gives you something to reminisce about.

It is based on the experiences you had in the first year that gives you a foresight into the subsequent years and to righten all your wrongs.
