Here is the list of Top 10 Technical Universities in Ghana [2020 Update]

Today we are going to share with you all the technical universities in Ghana. Currently, there are 10 technical universities in Ghana, that was formerly known at Polytechnics in Ghana after they were given accreditation by the National Accreditation Board.

Tamale Technical University (TATU)

Tamale Technical University is one of Africa’s leading Universities offering world-class technical and vocational education in northern Ghana. The enormous contributions of the then Polytechnic received Technical University classification in 2018 under the Technical Universities Act, 2016 (Act 922) following its excellence in the provision of high standard form of education in the country.

The TATU is sited within the Education Ridge area of Tamale, which is about two kilometres away from the Central Business District. It is digitally located on NS-011-9772. The strategic location of the University provides easy access to some important points of attraction such as the Gambaga Escarpement, Laribanga mosque, Damongo game reserve, Mognori ecovillage, and Kulmasa traditional ritual site.

The university renders services to a student population of about 7,000 of diverse nationalities which include Ghana, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Mali and Nigeria. The institution’s motto, “Banysim Mini Nuuni Tuma”, motivates academic excellence, combined with strong business ties, is an effect of the diversity of the student population and a complete emphasis on practical training.

Kumasi Technical University (KSTU)

The present “Kumasi Technical University” was converted from the famous, elegant and vibrant “Kumasi Polytechnic” under The Technical University Act 2016, (Act 922) with the aim of providing higher education in engineering, applied arts, science technology-based disciplines, technical and vocational training.

Kumasi Technical University is located in the heart of the Garden City of West Africa, the capital of the Ashanti Region of Ghana (Kumasi) and it is a spectacularly beautiful institution. It has become an important training center not only for Ghanaians, but also for other nationals from African countries.

As an institution, their hallmark the value of integrity, setting pace, giving equal opportunity to all and remaining committed to their mandate. KsTU runs numerous study courses, categorised into seven: Applied Sciences, Built and Natural Environment, Business and Management Studies, Creative Arts and Technology, Engineering, Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development, and Health Sciences.

Accra Technical University (ATU)

Accra Technical University is a beacon of global excellence in competency bases and practice-oriented training, applied research and technology transfer. As the nation’s premier Technical University, their mandate is to provide higher education in engineering, Science and technology-based disciplines, Technical and Vocational Education and Training, Applied Arts and related disciplines.

In the quest of continuously producing graduates that are fully equipped for the world of work, the provision of technological solutions through applied research to industry and communities becomes a priority. ATU in conformity with the mandate of the Technical University Act, 2016 (922) is fueled by the zeal to achieve greater results and keeping up with the global pace of technical development through creativity.

Accra Technical University is located in Accra’s Central Business District; its strategic position makes it the only “inner city” technical university. Fortunately, ATU share borders with other noble institutions, such as Movenpick and Accra City Hotel (former Novotel), while the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the University of Ghana’s City Campus share the northern zone. The Central Police Command, the Ghana Cocoa Board and two Telcos (AirtelTigo and MTN) border to the west, and the Ghana Assembly Press to the south.

Cape Coast Technical University (CCTU)

Cape Coast Technical University, formerly Cape Coast polytechnic has gone through phases of transitions, conversions and upgrades to its present status. The main aim of the university is to train its students to be academically and technically balanced to match the challenges of the new century.

Koforidua Technical University (KTU)

Koforidua Technical University over the years has produced high-level career-focused and skilled manpower to support the country’s industrial growth.v Its status changed to a Technical Universities on 1st September 2016 in compliance with the Technical University Act 2016, (Act 922).  It is an outstanding tertiary institution in the Eastern Region and one of the fastest-growing Technical Universities in Ghana with immense prospects.

The University currently can currently boast of five (5) Faculties and one Institute with about eight thousand (8,000) students. They are:

  1. Faculty of Business and Management Studies (FBMS)
  2. Faculty of Applied Science and Technology (FAST)
  3. Faculty of Engineering (FOE)
  4. Faculty of Built and Natural Environment (FBNE)
  5. Faculty of Health and Allied Science (FHAS)
  6. Institute of Open and Distance Learning

Ho Technical University (HTU)

The origin of the Ho Technical University goes back to 1968. It was established as a Technical Institute with the primary objective of providing pre-technical education. By 1972, the institute had made tremendous progress in upgrading the courses offered. Consequently the pre-technical programmes gave way to courses in the Engineering and Vocational fields, e.g. Basic Engineering, Agricultural and Mechanical Engineering, Building Technology and Business Education.

In 1986, the Institute became a Polytechnic. It however continued to operate as second cycle institution, until 1993 when the Polytechnic was upgraded to a fully-fledged tertiary institution by the enactment of PNDC Law 321 and charged with the responsibility of training students in the technical and vocational skills to the Higher National Diploma [HND] level. Subsequently, in 2007, Polytechnics were given the mandate  by the Polytechnics Act 745 to award their own degrees to the highest level.

Since then, the Polytechnic has been running programmes from non-tertiary level to the bachelor degree level. This year, the Polytechnic has been given the permit to run Masters in Agricultural Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

Takoradi Technical University (TTU)

Takoradi Technical University is a public tertiary education institution (university) located in Sekondi-Takoradi, the capital of the Western Region of Ghana.

Takoradi Technical University was established as a Government Technical Institute in 1954, and became part of the State Tertiary Education System. Later after the passage of the Polytechnic Law of 1992 (PNDCL 321).

It was replaced by Polytechnics Law (Act 745) in 2007. In 2016, the Bill to convert six out of the 10 polytechnics (including Takoradi Polytechnic) into a fully fledged university received a unanimous approval of Ghanaian legislators.

Sunyani Technical University (STU)

The Sunyani Technical University (formally known as Sunyani Polytechnic) is a public tertiary institution in the Bono Region of Ghana.

The Sunyani Technical University was established as a Technical Institute in 1967, as a non-tertiary institution, under the Ghana Education Service.

It was subsequently upgraded to a Polytechnic in 1997, following the passage of the Polytechnic Law of 1992 (P.N.D.C. Law 321), by the Government of Ghana, as a Tertiary Educational Institution to run Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes.

The Polytechnics Act, 2007 (Act, 745), which was an amendment of the P. N. D. C. Law 321, subsequently mandated the Polytechnics in Ghana to run and award Higher National Diploma (HND) Certificates, Diplomas and other higher degrees, subject to the approval of the Polytechnic Councils.

Bolgatanga Technical University

The Bolgatanga Technical University is a public tertiary institution in the Upper East Region of Ghana.

The Polytechnics Act, 2007 (Act, 745), which was an amendment of the P. N. D. C. Law 321, subsequently mandated the Polytechnics in Ghana to run and award Higher National Diploma (HND) Certificates, Diplomas and other higher degrees, subject to the approval of the Polytechnic Councils.

Wa Technical University

The Wa Polytechnic, which was the last of the ten regional polytechnics in Ghana, was officially established in September 1999.

However, it was not until 2002 that the Interim Governing Council was appointed by Government to provide policy direction to the Polytechnic.

The first batch of tertiary students was admitted in 2003 to pursue HND programmes in Agricultural Engineering and Secretaryship and Management Studies.
