Government Should Put a Fee on Water Bottles – Hassan Ayariga

Founder and leader of the ‘All People’s Congress’, Hassan Ayariga has called on the government to institute a measure that will see to the addition of 50 pesewas to the price of bottled water as fee for the bottles.
Speaking on the Citi FM’s Citi Breakfast Show, he said the move will help reduce the rate of improper disposal of such items which contribute to the choking of water ways and eventually flooding when the rains set in.
With this, people who buy bottle water will be charged an extra 50 pesewas which will be refunded after returning the bottle(s) to the vendors. The plan, according to him will help companies retrieve the bottles for recycling.

He also bemoaned the failure of citizens in making their communities clean. “It looks as if we ourselves are not taking responsibility of our communities”, he said, whiles lamenting how he had to properly dispose off a bottle someone had littered at the airport whiles seeing his mother-in-law off.
“If you look at what is happening right now, this is not the raining season and we are facing these difficulties. What is going to happen in future may be more disastrous than now” he added, as an advise the government to declare the forthcoming Saturdays as a general cleaning day where citizens will go out and desilt their gutters as he forsees a more disastrous situation if proper steps are not taken.
After last Monday’s rains, pictures of Hassan Ayariga and his flooded home went viral. This he explains was as a result of choked gutters around his haatso home which he says initiatives taken to help desilt them had proved futile causing the floods.
