UPDATE: Police begins investigation into man’s death on Legon campus

The Legon Police is investigating an alleged murder on the University of Ghana, legon campus involving a gentleman suspected to be in his mid or late-twenties.

The deceased who is believed to have been stabbed multiple times is alleged to have struggled from the bushes and finally died at the spot in the pool of his own blood.

Reports suggest that at about 10pm Sunday evening [Feb 10] the body of the deceased who is yet to be identified, was found by some students on the stretch from the Mensah Sarbah Hall annexes to the Fire Station on campus.

According to one of the eyewitnesses [only identified as Boadi], the lifeless body was lying on a pavement at the junction which leads to Nania FC park when he arrived at the scene with his friend. He added that a call was immediately put through to the police emergency unit who however did not arrive until they had left.

‘I saw the picture on my friend’s Whatsapp status and immediately called him to find what was happening. We went to the scene together and saw the lifeless body of the man on the ground. I called 191 immediately but no one came until we left’, he noted.

He added that while the crowd at the scene kept increasing, they were advised to move away by some people they suspected to be laborers.

‘We were there for almost 30 minutes until some of the laborers around told us to leave. But since the police had not come, no one asked us any question and we don’t know what happened next’, he added.

While the university management is yet to officially put out a statement on the issue, Univers News can confirm that the deceased is not a student of the University of Ghana as was earlier feared.

While confirming the status of the deceased to Univers News, Head of Security of the University of Ghana, George Amofa Fokuo said the gentleman was an outsider and not a student as suggested on social media.

‘I can confirm to you that the person is not a student and so members of the university community should relax while the police conducts further investigations’, he maintained.

The SRC is however cautioning students to avoid deserted routes and lonely paths and is encouraging students to be vigilant and conscious of their personal safety especially at night.

The Police has cordoned off the area to prevent evidence tampering. The body has since been deposited at the University of Ghana Hospital Morgue.
