The University of Ghana College of Health Sciences has held a fundraising ceremony in Accra to mobilise about GH¢1,616,970 to aid the development of the school’s library.

In her presentation, the Senior Assistant Librarian, Mrs Thoedosia Adanu, said the library needed to be upgraded to meet the standard of a modern library.

She said the shelves where books were packed and the desks in the library were all old and needed to be upgraded.

According to Mrs Adanu, the library needed urgent attention to support the students’ academic performance, pointing out that the windows and the main door needed to be replaced and a library security system installed, in addition to the fixing of air conditions and partition, while old journals needed to be discarded to create more space.

Other challenges

In his statement, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Patrick F Ayeh-Kumi, said the school had been confronted with challenges ranging from financial, infrastructure, academic and equipment, among others, but “our major concern now is to encourage students to research more databases so that they would be abreast of current and global literature.

For this reason, we plan to refurbish the college library digitally and physically to make it more user-friendly and we also want to furnish the empty spaces into comfortable ones to encourage active intellectual discourse.”

Brief history

The College of Health Sciences was established in 1999 and was the first college to be established by the University of Ghana.

It is an amalgamation of the various institutions that train health professionals in the University of Ghana.

With the restructuring of the entire university under the system of governance in 2014, the college has also had to restructure to conform to the changes that have taken place under the new governance system.

The other colleges are the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, College of Humanities and the College of Education.
