As academic institutions have been given the go-ahead to resume, the full blow-back of the almost full-year hibernation of the global economy is being felt by parents with wards in various academic institutions.
KNUST has had a long-standing tradition of payment of fees before registering for any academic year. This policy was not revised for the 2020/2021 Academic year. The plight of continuing students whose parents could not foot part or even the full amount due to current extenuating circumstances has reached the SRC Parliament.
The KNUST SRC Parliament has today, January 19, 2021, issued a press release petitioning the University’s management to consider the extenuating circumstances and once again show their empathy towards student grievances.
The petition had three suggestions enumerated in its content:
a) That while the online registration portal remains opened, all continuing students be allowed to register their courses, whether or not they have paid their fees, so as to be eligible for corresponding academic activities.
b) That even after closure of the online registration portal upon expiration of the deadline, same be opened at other times during the semester to allow students who could not register the first time to do so.
c) That even in the unlikely event that the online portal would not be opened again upon expiration of the deadline, all examination officers at the department levels should, at all times during the semester and before the final semester examinations, open their doors to all such students who would not be able to register the first time to do so at their offices.
These demands in the petition resonate the difficult time most parents are facing in trying to raise fees for their wards.
The University’s management is yet to respond.
