Belinda Elikplim, a 2nd year Law student, has been selected to chair a committee to prepare African participants for international model United Nations events in 2019. Belinda has just returned from attending the 16th session of the Oxford International Model United Nations (OxIMUN) at Oxford University (UK) as a delegate.

Model United Nations (MUN) events are hosted by the world’s most prestigious universities: Harvard, Yale, Cambridge and Oxford.

OxIMUN is known as Europe’s premier model United Nations conference and provides an opportunity for carefully selected delegates to participate in high-quality debates, hear from eminent guest speakers, and network with students from the world’s leading universities.

This year, OxIMUN was held at the University of Oxford, UK, on the 26th-28th of October 2018.

Belinda was selected by IFED Global out of over 250 applicants to participate in a committee at the OxIMUN event that simulates the proceedings of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the principal judicial organ of the United Nations in The Hague. Prior to selection, applicants were required to write a paper on the topic ‘Human rights protection across Africa’.

Belinda was privileged to be part of a jury that presided over a case on the death penalty and denial of consular access.

IFED Global, which stands for Innovation for Empowerment and Development, is an educational and advocacy organisation that provides global platforms to empower and develop the youth.

Talking about her experience following her return, Belinda said she was open to more learning opportunities and would put into practice what she had learned to apply for both the Commonwealth Young Ambassador scheme and the Africa-Europe Youth Summit.

Dr. Peter Wiredu, Head of Department at Wisconsin’s Faculty of Law, said he was not surprised Belinda was selected for this programme because he had taught her at Level 100 and knew her capabilities.

He added that as a faculty they were proud of Belinda’s achievement as it would encourage other students to achieve the same or better.

Dr. Wiredu commended the University’s management for their support in ensuring that Belinda’s participation in the programme was a success.
