Ivory Coast ruling party the RHDP on Wednesday officially nominated President Alassane Ouattara as candidate for October’s presidential election.

At a convention in Abidjan on Wednesday the party said it wanted Ouattara, 76, to run again for a third term.

By asking President Alassane Ouattara to seek re-election, Ivory Coast’s ruling party appeared to be trying to resolve a looming political crisis.

President Ouattara had announced that he would not be seeking a third term in office, saying he wanted the new generation to take over.

The man who was picked to run on the ticket of the ruling party, Prime Minister, Amadou Gon Coulibaly suddenly died earlier this month.- Advertisement –

Amadou Gon Coulibaly fell ill during a cabinet meeting and died afterwards at the hospital.

His death has left the ruling party in a state of confusion ahead of the presidential election in October.

The executive director of the Ivorian ruling party RHDP, Adama Bictogo, told RFI this month that Mr Ouattara was “best placed” to beat the opposition and was the “cement” holding the party together.

Mr Bictogo says President Ouattara should stand to avoid splitting the party but Mr. Ouattara is reportedly “still hesitating” seeking a third term.- Advertisement –

Ouattara who paid tribute to Gon Coulibaly thanked his party and asked for “a moment of remembrance and reflection” before confirming or declining his bid in the next weeks.

Elections are expected to take place on October 31, 2020.
