The CABESA Senate officially inaugurated with Master Malik Halid as first Senate speaker

The KNUST SRC Parliament approved the setup of a Senate for the College of Art and Built Environment in the earlier part of last month. This Senate comes as a remedy to the lack thereof of a representative body for the entire college when it comes to student representation and promulgation and enforcement of laws passed by the SRC Parliament.

On July 3, 2021, Mr. Kwame Takyi ably assisted by the College Judicial Committee Chairperson, Mr. Samuel Osei Frimpong paved way for the inauguration of the CABESA Senate which is representative of the three major faculties within the college: Arts, Education and Built Environment. These facilities are under the new CABESA Senate designated as the Caucuses.

The event was held in two-fold with the initial program being the inauguration ceremony of the Senate and the latter being the commencement of the first sitting for the newly inaugurated CABESA Senate. The nominee for Speaker of the Senate, Master Malik Halid was sworn in by the College Judicial Committee Chairperson, Mr. Samuel Osei Frimpong and as per the Constitution, the Speaker then went on to swear in the elected presidents and general secretaries of the various departments and faculties of the College as well as Year representatives. The next to be sworn in were the nominees for Clerk, Deputy-Clerk and Marshall of the Senate.

The event proceeded on recess and resumed with the second event for the day-the first sitting of the CABESA Senate. The Speaker, Master Malik Halid, proceeded to show his appreciation to the College’s leadership for making the Senate setup a reality and went to echo the Senate’s unrelenting drive to duly carry out its mandate assiduously. He then appointed the various faculty presidents and general secretaries to the portfolios of the Caucus Head and Deputy Caucus heads for the three caucuses within the College: Art Caucus, Education Caucus and Built Environment Caucus.

The Judicial Committee Chairperson was then invited to make a presentation to the house, the SRC Amended Constitution. This was followed by a move by a senator to adjourn the sitting who which was then seconded bringing the entire event to a successful end.

After congratulating the senators on their swearing in, a vote was cast for the position of Deputy Speaker of the Senate, to which Senator Derrick Amponsah emerged victorious among the three nominated senators who were nominated for the position. The election of the Deputy Speaker was followed shortly by an address from the President of the College, Master Kwame Takyi, who enumerated the many strides his team had made in their time at the helm of affairs of the College.
