The vetting panel that will interview candidates contesting for various offices in this year’s University of Ghana Students Representative Council election has been announced.

Eight men, who are not new to student elections on the University of Ghana campus, are members of this panel.

Some members of the panel include the Electoral Commissioner, Henry Ackon; Acting SRC Vice-President, Barnabas Mensah; and Acting SRC President at the Accra City Campus, Banning Clinton Baffour.

Conspicuously missing was women’s representation.

With university authorities appointing more women to occupy major management positions, one would have expected that the SRC would have followed suit.

Bismark Kwaku Asante, a contender in the 2019 University of Ghana SRC election, says that the ‘unfair’ gender representation on the panel is “disgraceful, primitive, and backward.”

“Apart from what may be patent unconstitutionality in terms of the composition, I wonder why, in this day and age, you’d have an 8 member panel for whatever reasons, and all of them are ‘penis-wielding-homosapiens.’ Especially for an institution like the University of Ghana where a lot of work has gone into making it gender-sensitive on the back of all these female elevations in the higher echelons of authority,” he told UniversNews in an interview.

2021 UGSRC Elections

A total of nine students are contesting for various offices in this year’s University of Ghana Students Representative Council election.

The Presidency has the highest number of contenders as four students are aiming at becoming the first democratically elected leader of the undergraduate students front since 2020 when Isaac Agyemang’s tenure in office expired.

Ayeh Priscilla Asantewaa is the only female in the presidential race.

Others in the presidential race are Ofosu Samuel Amos, Ayitta Felix Tawiah, and Asumadu Prince.

It is an all-women affair in the General Secretary race with Mate-Kodjo Jonelle, Antwi Stephanie Naadu, and Mwinviel-Rebecca Derry contesting.

Abdul-Rashid Abdul-Razak and Obeng Asamoah Daniel are the only aspirants for the Treasurer’s office.

The University of Ghana SRC election has been scheduled for September 10, 2021.

The Electoral Commission says that the election will be held both online and on-site.

First and final-year students will vote electronically with second and third-year students casting their vote on-site.

“Strictly online voting for Level 100 and 400 students. For the avoidance of doubt, online voting means voting over the internet electronically. Strictly ballot paper voting for Level 200 and 300 students (In-person voting)” the EC disclosed in the Constitution Instrument to be used for the election.

The vetting of these aspirants has been scheduled for Saturday, July 31, 2021.
