Council meeting was held over recent senior management level appointments; Chancellor confirms

Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Dr. (Mrs.) Mary Chinery-Hesse, has dismissed rumors suggesting that a meeting was not held prior to the announcement of some senior management level appointments at the University.

She says that even though the University Council was inaugurated few days to the end of July 2021, a meeting was held to make decisions on appointments that needed its approval.

Dr. Chinery-Hesse’s comment comes as a response to speculations that a Council meeting had not been held to make a decision of appointing Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University.

According to fast-circulating allegations, the notice from the office of the Registrar, announcing the appointment of Prof. Amfo as Acting Vice-Chancellor contained falsehoods.

These allegations, printed on paper and pasted indiscriminately on the campus of the university by faceless persons, claim that “no such [Council] meeting ever took place after the inauguration of the new University of Ghana Council to consider the relevant portions of both the new University of Ghana Act (806) and the University Statutes and, by extension, the decision to appoint an Acting Vice-Chancellor.”

But Dr. Chinery-Hesse, speaking on Sunday at the swearing-in ceremony of Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah as new Registrar of the University, dispelled such claims

I will like to place on record my immense appreciation for the manner in which this ceremony and the activities leading to it have been conducted. The Council of the University was constituted only last week, and since then, there has been a flurry of activity to hold a Council meeting before the end of the month in order to make senior-level appointments that needed Council approval,” she said.

She has pledged her support to Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo and the newly sworn-in Registrar of the University, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah.

As Chancellor, I am always available to lend advice to the management. I trust the incoming Registrar and Acting Vice-Chancellor to take advantage of my personal vast knowledge in administration and consult me if ever there is the need to do that,” she said at Sunday’s ceremony.
