The University of Health and Allied Sciences launched a research fund named “UHAS Research Fund” on Tuesday, January 15, 2019. According to the Vice Chancellor, Professor John Gyapong, the purpose of this fund is to equip members of faculty to get involved in cutting edge research in the University and also to compete for larger grants in the international arena.

Professor Gyapong, who was the Chairman of the ceremony stated that, members of faculty are required to conduct research, teaching and development of the University as a place of learning. He however mentioned that, the greatest challenge has been securing funding for research since the already existing sources of funding require great competition.

The Vice Chancellor also stated that, the “UHAS Research Fund” is resourced by up to 10% funds from the University’s Internally Generated Funds (IGF) and will provide applicants with Seed grants of up to GH¢7,500; Investigator led grants of up to GH¢25,000; Multidisciplinary grants of up to GH¢100,000 and the Faculty Development grant which will help faculty to further their education which is up to GH¢20,000. He however added that, the main focus of the University for the year 2019, will be the Seed grants and Investigator led grants.

Professor Fred Binka, former Vice Chancellor of UHAS, who was the invited guest at the ceremony stated that, the University system encourages research to enable members of faculty to strive in the University environment. He also said that, every institution needs to have small grants allocated solely to research and to solve interventions in various areas. Professor Binka encouraged the young faculty of UHAS to work together in teams, if need be, in order to support research work and also secure greater grant applications outside the University.

Also present at the launch were Professor Seth Owusu Agyei, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Dr. C.S. Kpeglo, Registrar, Deans and Directors, Faculty and other Senior Members of the University.
