University of Ghana Business School Holds Orientation Programme For Post-Graduate Students

The University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) oriented a new batch of postgraduate students for the School’s 2020/2021 academic Programmes via Zoom. There were two sessions for the orientation. The first session was held on the 13th of January 2021 and the second was on the 15th of January 2021. The sessions were mainly focused on the various resources available for teaching and learning online, as well as the general academic affairs of students.

Professor Justice N. Bawole, the Dean of UGBS, began the first session by congratulating the new students who had been admitted into the business school. He stated, “As a school, our vision is to become a world-class business school developing global leaders. And our mission, is focused on developing quality human resource capacity and leaders through the provision of world-class business and management education and cutting-edge research to meet national and global development needs”. He further urged the students not to accept anything but quality from the school. He intimated that, although COVID-19 has created a barrier, it should not limit them to create very productive engagement with faculty members and other colleague students as well. The orientation was moderated by the School Administrator, Mr. Emmanuel Poku-Sarkodee.
The School Administrator admonished the students to utilize the school’s facilities during this COVID-19 period. He reiterated the fact that the COVID-19 protocols would be strictly adhered to. He further informed the students of the various faculty offices, departments, and other facilities in the UGBS graduate building. He encouraged students to form WhatsApp groups so that information can easily be communicated through the class representative.

Dr. Acheampong Owusu, the ICT Coordinator and a lecturer at the Department of Operations and Management Information Systems was called to continue with the session. This session was geared at taking students through what to expect from the school in terms of the ICT facilities, the Systems Administration Support for Students, the Network Administration Support for students, and the general helpdesk support for students in case of needed assistance in the computer systems. He indicated that the UGBS ICT laboratory is a unit of the University of Ghana Computing System. Dr. Owusu and his team took the students through a thorough guide to aid in better online teaching and learning activities.
Mr. David Tetteh Odjeawo, the Senior Assistant Librarian, also took the students through the means of accessing authentic information effectively at the library. He further took the students through the ethics of writing, plagiarism and how to make basic and advanced searches in the library.

Mr. Yussif Amadu, again, walked the students through the use of Sakai. Sakai, he stated, is a management system used for teaching and learning. This is the online platform for University of Ghana students and lecturers, where teaching and learning material are uploaded, take up assignments and engage in discussions. Mr. Amadu further taught the students how to log onto the Sakai LMS.

The last period was the questions and answers session where students brought out their challenges as they were respectively answered.
