The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, has commissioned the security access gate building on the Academic Freedom Road near the University of Ghana Stadium.

The building which commenced a couple of years ago was built as part of the roads project of the University.

Speaking at a short ceremony to open the building, the Director of the Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate (PDMSD), Mr. Charles Kofi Nti disclosed that the new edifice is a six-room building and is spacious enough to enhance the work of the University of Ghana security personnel.

“The building itself has about six offices which will be used by our security to enhance the security of the campus.”

Mr. Kofi Nti also mentioned that a 100 cars capacity parking space was also constructed as part of the project.

The parking space is adjacent to the gate.

He also intimated that management has commenced talks with the Taxi Drivers Union near the Okponglo traffic light to operate from the all-new 100 cars capacity parking space.

“We’ve created a car park to accommodate all our other users basically. It’s a 100 capacity car park… We are still negotiating on how many slots they (taxi drivers) can take.”

The Acting Director of the Public Affairs Directorate, Ms. Eccles Adwoba Andoh also stated that the building is essential, adding that the security personnel and taxi drivers would have a permanent, more comfortable, and tidier place to work from.

“This is very significant; at least they (security personnel) will have a permanent place to operate from and the taxi drivers at the junction will also have to use this space. It has a capacity of over a hundred cars so they will be very comfortable and it is a neater place for them to operate from.”

She also added that the former space will be cleared and revamped, making the walk from the Okponglo junction to the Taxi rank a more enjoyable and relaxed experience.

“When they relocate tomorrow, they will start clearing the place and beautify that section for students to walk freely from the junction to access cars and also to pass through to the university.”
