The Covid-19 pandemic caused a massive overhaul of academic calendars for most academic institutions. KNUST was among those affected by the prolonged stay at home.

After four months of students cautiously mitigating the schooling terrain with risk of exposure to Covid-19 and all other uncertainties, KNUST brings the first semester of the 2020/2021 Academic calendar to a close today, April 23, 2021.

In anticipation of the break, the University’s management sent around its traditional notices for students in the halls and hostels on campus to vacate the campus accommodation latest by April 25, 2021. The notice has not been received too warmly by certain factions of the student populace whose academic activities may have them glued to campus for the break.

In response to these grievances, Master Daniel Silas Kwabena Acquah, the current hall president for Unity Hall and an aspirant for the KNUST SRC President portfolio has secured the consent of a sizeable number of aggrieved students along with a petition to the Dean of Students Office to take a few considerations into account and allow some other categories of the University’s students to stay back on campus to carry out their activities.

In the petition, Master DSK Acquah highlights issues for consideration including, the overstaying of some Social Sciences students on campus beyond the supposed departure date of April 25, 2021 as their exams comes to a close on April 28, 2021. He again highlights the risks posed by a further spread of the Corona Virus as students disperse from the bubble of campus en route to their various homes. The consideration of students leaving their luggage on campus as the break is a very brief one is also highlighted in the petition.

The final reason put forth by Master DSK is the work of final year students whom have been tasked with the collection of data for their final year projects; some of whom reside on campus at the various hostels and some in the halls as executives etc.

He concludes with a plea to allow such students with a genuine reason to stay back on campus to be allowed to stay in pursuit of those tasks enumerated above. The Dean of Students (DoS) is yet to respond to the petition sent to his outfit.
