Sports Director of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Anthony Agyei Tetteh-Opai has assured winners of the 2018/2019 inter-hall athletics competition that their allowances will be paid by the end of this month.

In an interview with Boakye Nyamekye Isaac on Focus FM’s flagship talk show, Leadership Corner; Sunday, 13th January,2019, Dr. Opai said these allowances are meant to be some form of motivation for the athletes but was unfortunate that after some months the monies have not been issued to the athletes.
Dr. Opai alluded the delay in payment of the allowances to challenges his office faced with respect to money.
“In fact last year was really a challenging year for sports in KNUST in the sense that we made so many request for our programs which we were able to organize, but there no money came and those problems brought us to where we are now. Sports is run with money. It becomes so difficult when you request for money and they’re not in.

According to him, despite the delays in getting monies, the Sports Directorate did well to at least get all the programs that were under calendar to be done. “Because the monies delayed, we could not give the athletes the awards that they won,” he said.
Dr. Opaye further confirmed that all the allowances due the athletes will be paid by end of January.
“Those issues have now been solved. Approval has been given by authorities for the monies to be paid to the students by close of the month.” he said.
He also encouraged students to participate in athletics and other games that are being held in the school to enjoy the numerous benefits associated with the campus sports.
