KNUST Students are in full support of our decision to boycott lectures today – SRC President insists

President for the Student Representative Council (SRC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Mr. Kelvin Saah has stated that he has the entire support of the student body in today’s planned boycott of lectures.
The planned boycott of lectures by KNUST-SRC is to express their displeasure over recent cases of brutalities suffered by students

In addition to the boycott of lectures, they shall engage in a demonstration against the school’s authority.


Since the official conversion of all traditional halls of residence into mixed ones by the school’s management, students, especially of the University Hall have suffered violence from the school’s security with the recent case happening on Friday.

Friday’s alleged brutality has resulted in one student battling for his life at the Tech Hospital in Kumasi.

Unfortunately, in all two reported cases of brutalities against the students, school management have appeared unconcerned.
Addressing students on KNUST’s campus based station, Focus FM, Mr. Kelvin Saah expressed his displeasure at the behaviour of the KNUST campus security.
According to him, he was disappointed at the campus security for acting hostile towards them.

“.. at this point students are fed up with how things are going, especially when students are feeling that the security who’s supposed to protect them, their core mandate, their main reason for being on campus is to ensure that student livelihood is well secured. Students are now in fear and panic because of security personal” he said.

He explained that the SRC fully understands the grievances of students as they held a council meeting with all students leaders to discuss the way forward.

He made it known that students showed their unwavering support towards the SRC’s decision to boycott lectures as well as engage in a peaceful protest.

“.. we then organized a meeting with all members of the SRC parliamentary council, with all student leaders, including class reps, department presidents, faculty presidents, college presidents and every single student interested to have an encounter with the SRC for us to discuss how issues have been over the few months…we’re just coming from this meeting and under the meeting students have made it clear that they are ever wiling to support all leaders on this strike we’re embarking on”

He further called on students to disregard the message from the office of the Dean of students directing them to attend lectures.
He elucidated that due to the level of agitation from the entire student populace, they still stand by their decision to embark on the strike today despite the Dean’s warning.

“we’re aware that a message has been sent from Dean of students stating that lectures is compulsory and everyone must go, but in the heat of this moment, we as the SRC together with the Parliamentary Council and NUGs local KNUST and all student leaders are still by this information standing by our early on released communique that tomorrow we’re not attending lectures and this is a strike to send out a message to everyone”  he stressed.

He added that they have tabled a petition which will be presented to the administration today.

According to him, the petition contains certain specific requirement they expect to be met in other to alleviate the worries of students.
“.. for the students who were beaten, we’re requiring that that the administration will compensate him, and ensure that his medical well being is ensured, for moral being banned we feel students should have their liberty, if it has to be controlled, we don’t have a problem with that.

But a ban cannot be put on an activity that makes students happy. For the security personnel, we’re requiring the university to come out and let us know that henceforth, professionalismbe exuded in their work such that there will be no such an instance being repeated” he demanded.
