For years, electoral commissions in various departments, faculties, colleges and the KNUST SRC have been accused of siphoning monies from aspirants for various reasons.

Each time, the allegations and accusations have been brushed off for lack of evidence and the victims accused of malicious intents.

On June 23, a similar incident happened where a non residential aspirant accused the EC in charge of the Non-Re elections of demanding money from aspirants to give them vetting questions before the vetting and recommendation after the vetting.

As usual, the allegations were brushed off in a lengthy communique from the office of the of the Electoral Commissioner, Emmanuel Gyimah.

According to the EC, all monies collected from aspirant were legitimate. He further stated that no transactions were made outside the jurisdiction of the Electoral Commission.

Contrary to the disclaimer, receipt of a payment from one aspirant (name withheld) to the Deputy EC, Josiah Akwei Appiah Lartey popularly known as Barrister, who was in charge of the Non-Re elections prove otherwise.

A total of Ghc 151.00 was paid to the personal mobile money number of the deputy EC. According to our informant who spoke with the aspirant, the money was to get a recommendation for the aspirant in question after the vetting process.

The aspirant claimed Barrister told her that she wasn’t recommended and should pay Ghc 500.00 in order to be recommended. After bargaining, the two agreed on Ghc. 200 and Ghc 151.00 was paid to Josiah.
