Father John is a great legend of the University Hall; what is commonly known as Katanga. He was also known as Sir John. He was also a student at the university and a member of the hall. His feats and beliefs are what have earned him such a great name in Katanga and KNUST.
He has a statue built in his honor at Katanga. One of the statues shows him holding an opened book which signifies academic excellence hence the motto “Rest Not”. The members of Katanga are also expected to strive to achieve academic success especially during their stay in KNUST.
Legend has it that Father John himself handpicked those who are to become a part of Katanga. Believe it or not, most students who have become a part of Katanga over the years have been brilliant in their academics and have also achieved so much success in their lives. Legend also has it that Father John is the only student with the highest average which is a record yet to be broken.
He supposedly attained over 90% average in KNUST. His statues are not just to honor him but also to remind the members of Katanga where they are and what they must do. He has been a great pillar for Katanga and what it stands for; hence the motto, “the legend lives on”. Father John is also seen as a spiritual and academic leader by the Katangees (the people of Katanga).
No matter what kind of story you hear about Father John, one thing you can be sure of is the kind of impact or mark he has left on Katanga and KNUST.
