MTN FA Cup: Hearts of Oak complete domestic double

Accra Hearts of Oak have completed a domestic double after beating Ashantigold on penalties to win their 11th FA Cup trophy, adding to the Ghana Premier League trophy they have already won this season.

Hearts of Oak’s goalkeeper, Richard Attah, delivered the trophy in a marathon penalty-kick shootout, saving two and scoring one himself in the 8-7 victory after the game ended 0-0 after extra time.

After 120 minutes of swift counter-attacking action, both sides had to settle for penalties.

The Phobians had the better of the chances, pulling together intricate passes but could not carve out the backline of the Ashgold team.

The Miners themselves had chances of their own but could not find the finishing touch to break the compact  Hearts of Oak defense at the Accra Sports Stadium.

In extra time, the Phobians thought they had themselves a penalty in the 116th minute of the game but Referee Daniel Laryea waved play on.

After 120 minutes of grueling action, the game proceeded to a penalty shoot-out.

Fataw, the Hearts captain stepped up first and calmly scored. Amos Addae miscued his strike, giving Hearts an early advantage after a brilliant save by Richard Attah.

Emmanuel Nettey stepped up and delivered but Caleb Amankwah’s miss kept fans on the edge, however, David Abagna also smashed the ball against the crossbar and restored Heart’s lead.

Robert Addo Sowah dispatched his kick with perfection, Banahene, also doing same for Ashgold.

Daniel Afriyie Barnieh came short, with the Kofi Mensah saving his side as Akoto drew level on penalties.

Mohammed Alhassan kept his cool slotted home the ball with Yaw Annor also smashing in the ball.

Victor Aidoo, Raddy Ovuka all scored to keep both fans and players nervy as Ashgold followed suit.

Benjamin Afutu’s strike was calmly saved by Kofi Mensah who thought he had become the hero of the game but Richard Attah had ideas of his own, saving the next penalty and blasting home his strike before Ashgold keeper Kofi Mensah missed to hand the Phobians the title.

Hearts of Oak have now won its seventh double in the club’s history. Having done the double in 1973,1979, 1990, 1996, 1999, and 2000.
