The University of Ghana Librarian, Prof. Perpetua Dadzie, has charged patrons of the university’s libraries to adhere to COVID-19 protocols, particularly the wearing of nose masks.

She observed that patrons, mostly students, are quick to remove their nose masks after being granted entry into the facility.

She is worried that this attitude may result in the closure of the library due to a possible spread of the disease among patrons.

Prof. Dadzie says that even though efforts are made by the staff of the library to get patrons to wear the mask whilst using the library, reluctance to obey is high.

“They come in with their nose masks because they cannot come in without the nose mask. As soon as they are seated, they remove the nose masks. We go round and we remind them to put it on. They obey but after a short while, they take it off. We don’t want the COVID spreading in the library, if it spreads, we would have to shut down the library. So we are pleading with students to just keep the nose mask on,” Prof. Dadzie said on the Let’s Go To The Library programme on Radio Univers 105.7FM.

On suggestions that staff of the library could force recalcitrant patrons out of the facility, she insisted on pleading with students so that they are not denied access to their information needs.

“It’s a plea, we do not want to get to the extend of throwing students out. We are here because they need our services and so we will go to all extents to provide the service that they need. So if they are not complying, we will beg them to comply,” Prof. Dadzie added.

Two others are on the verge of completion.

The university has targeted to establish a total of ten e-libraries across all regional distance learning centres.

The four e-libraries that have been completed are at the learning centers in Koforidua, Takoradi, Sunyani, and Kumasi.
