Management of the Valley View University Basic Schools says that it is gradually phasing out Ga as a Ghanaian Language, starting from the 2020/2021 academic year.
This will affect only pupils in Grade one to three.
These classes will only offer Twi as a Ghanaian Language in the school.
The school’s authorities have explained that the decision is a result of the difficulty in getting qualified teachers to handle the subject.
“The school will continue to offer the Twi/Ga option from Basic four up to Basic nine,” a statement signed by the School’s Director, Beatrice Ama Ntanu added
Meanwhile Board Chairman of the School, Dr. Robert Akpalu, in another statement, has assured that efforts are been made to ensure the availability of adequate teachers for all subjects including the Ga Language.
He debunked the assertion that the decision to phase out Ga Language education was made on tribal lines.
“The Valley View University Basic School as a subsidiary of the Valley View University practices a policy of non-discrimination and hereby wishes to state that, the management of the Basic School did not intend any harm or malice to any ethnic group or persons. The decision was purely based on the unavailability of qualified Ga teachers for a period of time. We hereby wish to assure all and sundry of intensifying our efforts o ensure the availability of adequate teachers for all subjects including the Ga language,” part of the statement reads.
Valley View University Basic Schools’ decision will be not tolerated – Nungua Traditional Council
The Nungua Traditional Council says that it is appalled by the decision of the management of the Valley View University Basic Schools.
It says that it is a “calculated attempt to entirely exterminate and blot out the Ga language.”
The Council says that “such an act to be perpetrated by a school situated at Oyibi, a bonafide jurisdiction of the Wor-Bor Maawu will not be tolerated by the Shitse and the excuse of the unavailability of teachers is fictitious, to say the least.”
They are asking that the “decision is reversed with immediate effect because it seeks to denigrate, disrespect and disregard the Ga Dangme State.”
